Was there a venue in particular you liked as a performer? We were super close friends for the last 10 years of his life. But the Ramones did an in-store at Tower Records, I think the album was “Too Tough to Die,” and I met all the Ramones there.īut I didn’t really speak to Johnny and become friends with him until 1995, when the Ramones were the opening act for a White Zombie tour, then we started talking and hit it off. I lived in the same area as Johnny because I would see him at the post office, just standing in line. “The very first thing we did was Audition Night in 1985.”Ĭan you talk about the first time you met Johnny Ramone? “They used to have an Audition Night and if they thought you were good enough to come back and play real nights, they would let you come back,” said Zombie. To me those were the big bands I was excited to see.ĬBGB at 315 Bowery, the site of White Zombie’s first show ever. I was really into hardcore so whenever these bands like Bad Brains or Black Flag came to town, I’d see them. I had never heard of Anthrax, I had never heard of any of these bands. That was totally off my radar, at least not until the very end when we started going to Brooklyn to play at L’Amour. I wasn’t aware of the metal scene when I was in New York. Sonic Youth was bigger, but most of the bands we hung around with were on the same level. It was more like you were friends with the band. I remember seeing them many, many times at CBGB’s. Rolling into class became virtually impossible.Īs a fan, were there any bands you were excited to see? If nothing was going on, we’d hang out there all night. I saw so many great bands from Run-DMC to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds at Danceteria. Danceteria was a big club at that time and we’d stay out till 4. It basically entailed going out every single night because that was a great time for that.
